Supplier Glacier Country Helicopters helps West Coast cleanup efforts

Southern Alps Meats Procurement Manager Gus Gordon through his Glacier Country Helicopters business has been helping the West Coast cleanup efforts in conjunction with the Maritime NZ National Response Team. Tonnes of rubbish has been collected by volunteers after an old landfill was opened up by severe weather 3 weeks ago. Forest & Bird, Greenpeace New Zealand, Department of Conservation, Westland District Council and NZ Civil Defence have all assisted with the mighty cleanup.

PH07 Streamlands Export NZ Limited / Southern Alps Meats Limited front of premises

It’s a year ago this week that we started processing wild red deer at PH07 in partnership with Streamlands Export NZ Limited. Thanks to the support of a great bunch of hunters, staff, customers and shareholders we have far exceeded our expectations for the first year in terms of deer numbers. We’ve got a lot of further improvements to make in 2018 to our capacity and our use of data throughout the business but we reckon we’re off to a flying start. By keeping it wild we believe we have a real point of difference and a unique product that will be appreciated more and more in the years ahead. The team at the plant are all committed to improving the range and quality of our products so we’re convinced the only way is up from here.

With some decent summer weather the wild red deer are starting to pour in from our hunters.

This mob of West Coast wild red deer were delivered in early December courtesy of founder and shareholder Gus Gordon at Glacier Country Helicopters . They were shot from GCH’s flash new NOTAR helicopter and we’ve put a few photos up on Instagram of a recent hunt.

We work closely with a group of hand-picked hunters throughout the South Island to co-ordinate a steady supply of deer, tahr and other species throughout the year. We provide new hunters with a manual detailing delivery, data and field-dressing standards as well as a whole heap of feedback on how to present the carcasses for the best possible return. Our hunters work in well with one another to share transport, parts, tips and chillers to their mutual advantage.

Throughout 2018 we hope to add a few new faces from the East Coast of the South Island and the Nelson / Marlborough area in particular. If you are interested in supplying us, check out the Suppliers page.

Santa brought us some new hats

The team enjoyed a great lunch of Ribs, Brisket and Pulled Pork plus a few coldies at our 2017 end of year Christmas party. Thanks to Bootleg BBQ Co. for looking after us so well. A good day was had by all and Santa came to the party with some newly minted Southern Alps Meats caps and beanies. Everyone has worked hard this year but an extra big shout out goes to those proud parents, both new and experienced, who made the team just a little bigger this year.
